The Asiatic Petroleum company
(North China) Limited,
Shanghai.
Dear Sirs,
Shanghai.
20th August, 1914.
We are in receipt of your esteemed letter of yesterday, contents of which we have carefully
noted and shall be much pleased to hear from you
further as soon as you receive definite instructions
from H.B.M's Consular and Judicial authorities. We
too, most sincerely hope, that the cessation of business between us, if such should be unavoidable, may be only of a very short duration, considering the very friendly relations existing between us and the fact, that whenever there was a possibility to meet any of your wishes or requirements we have done so with the greatest pleasure.
Permit us that we express our opinion on the
3 enquiries you are addressing to your Authorities;
As regards 2 and 3) During the war it will no doubt be impossible to execute any contracts for shipment from home, except from countries being neutral; in some of them we have also placed contracts and perhaps the goods will be shipped to Shanghai but we do not know anything about it as since about 2 weeks we do not receive any letters or telegrams from Vienna. We might mention that a British Fire Insurance Company after the outbreak of the war made out Policies with us; this clearly shows that they are
permitted
